Super Gamer 86 – This Apex Isn’t That Apex

Apex Construct is not Apex Legends. If you go to the Chinese Steam page for Apex Construct it will tell you this explicitly. This week’s guest is Andreas Juliusson, marketing and communications manager for Fast Travel Games, and he’s here to tell us why that is.

Super Gamer 85 – Control Schemes part one: Benjamin Gwin

Hey Super Gamers. So this episode is kind of a two-parter in two different media; we’ve got a THEME this week: wacky controls!

On this week’s podcast, we’ve got Benjamin “Bearzly” Gwin, the Guinness World Record holder for Most alternative control methods used to complete Dark Souls. He’s beaten the game using a Rock Band drum kit, guitar, his voice, a dance pad, a steering wheel, and more. Find out why and how he did it, and what it would take to bring him out of retirement!

Control Schemes part two has been taken down briefly, but will return!

The 99s and 100s of the NHL

There’s only one 99 in hockey, but in video game hockey there are several – actually, there are a few 100s, too.

In EA Sports’ NHL series, players are given an overall rating that reflects their skill level, based on the hockey prowess of the real-life player. EA’s sports games come out for the year ahead (NHL ’94 was released in ’93, for example, ahead of the ’93/’94 hockey season), so player ratings are based on the past year’s performance. Before patches and online updates were the norm, player ratings could get out of date pretty quickly. I thought it’d be interesting to look back and see which players lived up to their scores, and which ones maybe didn’t deserve them in the first place. Continue reading

Super Gamer 84 – Enkian Games

In this week’s Super Gamer, we’ve got Jordan Allen of Enkian Games on to talk about their recent release: Tales of Enki: Pilgrimage. Listen in on some of the nitty-grit of RPG making: How much damage should each weapon do? How much health should a Red Potion restore? And how much effort goes into creating NPCs?

Super Gamer 82 – Daniel Voth’s Journey

Daniel Voth is a super nice guy who’s always gone out of his way to say hello to me at events. He’s also a major contributor in the Winnipeg gaming scene. He’s a project manager at Bit Space Development, administrator of IGDA Winnipeg, and co-coordinator of Winnipeg Game Jam.

After talking about how Daniel got to be so involved in the gaming community, we get deep into perception and language and relationships in games, and we answer the question: Can Daniel walk on his hands?

Super Gamer 80 – New to the Dev, Not to the Game

This week’s guest is our dear (returning) friend Albertine Watson. She’s moved on from the PR side of the gaming industry and is now a developer. She’ll also be speaking at the upcoming Pegjam in Winnipeg. This is a particularly good episode for any new or aspiring devs.
